For me, having a filter is a must be against dust all all the hazards in hot coverages (helicopter, military, firefighters, cops, even crowd ...) and the hood too. The later act as a front bumper.
Some years ago, climbing a vertical ladder, I destroyed the front of a 80-200 without hood.
