I didn't have the original one, so I can't compare the two, but:
Mine (about 2 years old) has two big internal pockets; I don't know that I'd want to carry a six-pack on each side, but I've fit a 24-70 2.8 L in there with ease.
The shoulders aren't padded; the care instructions say "Machine Wash Warm Do Not Dry Clean". It does machine wash well; the shoulders aren't padded but I suppose the hood might be affected by dry cleaning. This one looks more like an M65 field jacket than something I'd wear with a tie, I think.
