Steadicam® Introduces the Most Powerful Battery in Steadicam History
Las Vegas, NV, NAB 2006, Booth SU2989, April 24th – Steadicam, a division of The Tiffen Company will unveil its new Steadicam Power Cube™ at NAB2006. Acting on manufacturer’s and operator’s requests for more power, these new dual 6000mAh IDX batteries can handle any camera’s power requirements.
The Steadicam Power Cube utilizes the new Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) technology never before used in the broadcast/film industry. The Power Cube was researched and developed based on extensive application knowledge of Tiffen/Steadicam and innovative battery technology of IDX. It is the world’s first IATA compliant Li-Ion battery pack designed and developed for the energy demanding film camera applications.
Working with IDX, Tiffen created the most advanced battery system in the history of Steadicam, with plenty of power for long run times with any camera. It’s a two-battery system, providing both 14 and 28 volts directly from the batteries. For the Panavision Genesis with the recorder attached, an additional battery is added in series. With this system, you can record an entire tape (52 minutes) with power to spare. The Power Cube is designed to withstand extreme in-rush for high rate film speeds (Arri 435:150 frames/sec).
The new batteries are conservatively rated at 6000 mAh @ 14.8 volts. They easily handle 10 amps continuously, and up to 20 amps for short periods of time. Charging time is about an hour. The Power Cube is able to provide continuous high rate discharge unimaginable by previous Li-Ion technology. Continuous draw is up to 10A (110W). Steadicam 24V application can draw up to 220W. The Power Cube breaks the limitations of previous Li-Ion performance and yet maintains the great attributes of its predecessor (high energy to weight ratio, no memory effect, and cold temp performance). It also addresses the high rate energy needs for HD video camera applications.
The Power Cube’s cylindrical Lithium-ion technology has never sacrificed durability against rough handling, unlike ones with fragile-power-only cell technology. The new two-battery system weighs in about the same as the single 28v NiCad used by the original Ultra.
The Power Cube comes with the triple safety protections – In the pack circuit board, in the charger (IDX Charger) and in each individual cell. It can be recharged with a variety of IDX Li-Ion charging devices that are widely available
all over the world. The Power Cube batteries attach to the sled via IDX’s
standard, extremely positive V-Lock system, and “regular” IDX batteries can also be used when the amp loads are not too high.
Jerry Holway, Steadicam Owner and Operator states: “On the movie ‘Empty City,’ we used a couple of Power Cubes in parallel to power a Panavision Genesis and recorder. That's 14 amps at 14.8 volts and it ran for 52 minutes until the tape ran out. There was still lots of power left in the batteries. Everyone on the set was astonished!”
