CONTRAST FILTERS
“Controlling The Contrast Of Light“

Controlling contrast is difficult in bright sunlit exteriors. Exposing for either the highlights or shadows will leave the other severely under- or over exposed. Tiffen offers four type of Contrast filters: Ultra, Low Light Ultra, Low, and Soft. Each one affects a scene’s contrast by adjusting the ratio between highlights and shadows.

ULTRA CONTRAST: Tiffen received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for the innovative design of this filter. Ultra Contrast reduces contrast by spreading the ambient light throughout the entire scene to lighten all shadow areas, so that more details can be seen. There’s no effect to the highlighted areas. Does not create flare or halation. Sometimes used to achieve the “Film Look” in video with ½ - 1 density. Available in densities ¨û,, ¼, ½, 1 to 5. Not all densities are available in all filter sizes.
Light Loss: 0 f-stop

LOW LIGHT ULTRA CONTRAST: Designed for use in extreme low light situations to render details to shadow areas. Spreads light in the same way as the Ultra Contrast filter. Due to its design, this filter cannot be used in bright light situations. Available in densities 1-4. The Low Light Ultra Contrast is not available in all filter sizes.
Light Loss: 0 f-stop

LOW CONTRAST Similar to an Ultra Contrast in lightening the shadow areas, but instead of spreading light into the entire scene, it spreads light to shadows areas in the general vicinity of the light source. This may create slight flaring. Creates muted pastel colors. Available in densities ¨û, ¼, ½, 1 to 5. Not all densities are available in all filter sizes.
Light Loss: 0 f-stop

SOFT CONTRAST Reduces contrast by darkening highlights, while lightening shadows at the same time. Available in densities 1to 5.
Light Loss: 0 f-stop
